Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who grew up in Umatilla
and played at Umatilla High School, signed a five-year contract
extension Tuesday morning, according to reports from MLB.com.
The extension runs through the 2016 season with a club option for 2017.
According to reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the
contract is believed to be worth between $11 million and $13 million.
Lucroy was signed through the 2012 season, but that agreement was absorbed into the new contract.
Lucroy, 25, was the Brewers No. 1 catcher last season — his first full season in the majors.
He has had a good spring, hitting .469, with a home run and six RBIs,
going into Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals in Phoenix.
Despite missing the start of last season while on the disabled list
with a broken finger on his right hand, he started 114 games for the
Brewers and hit .265 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs. He made his
major-league debut in 2010 and played 75 games with a .253 average,
four homers and 26 RBIs.
He played his college baseball at Louisiana Lafayette before becoming a third-round draft pick by the Brewers in 2007.
In 2004, his senior season at Umatilla, Lucroy hit .447 and had 10 home runs and 27 RBIs.
