Tavares wins Class 5A-7 title, will host regional quarterfinal, April 22, 2012

Koral Smith pitched a complete game and had two hits on Friday to lift the Tavares High School softball team to a 5-1 win against Dunnellon in the Class 5A-District 7 championship game at Crystal River. 

With the win, Tavares will host a Class 5A-Region 2 quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Fred Stover Sports Complex. 

Smith struck out eight and allowed only three hits in the circle for the Bulldogs. At the plate, she scored a run. 

Cindy Cuevas and Katie Hohman scored two runs apiece for Tavares.

Jones paces six Bobcats on all-Conference Carolinas teams

HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College’s Joshua Jones (Christmas, Fla.) has been named the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, and headlines a group of six Bobcats receiving league recognition, announced conference officials Friday.

Lees-McRae (11-9, 5-5 CC) leads the conference with six all-conference selections, as Pfeiffer University, Limestone College, and Mount Olive College each placed four student-athletes on one of the three all-conference teams.

Jones garnered Freshman of the Year honors to lead the way for the Bobcats, as Randy Ramirez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Efrain Negron (Caguas, Puerto Rico) both earned a spot on the first team. Sophomores Matt Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio), John Lucas (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Jose Ribas (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) each garnered second team recognition.

A native of Christmas, Fla., Jones put together an impressive rookie season for the Bobcats this spring, averaging 2.30 kills per set in conference play while attacking at a .388 clip. The freshman middle blocker averaged nearly one block per frame against league opponents this season, posting 0.77 stuffs per set while ranking 25th in the nation in blocks per frame (1.05).

Ramirez continued to direct the Bobcat attack in superb fashion this spring, ranking 15th in the nation in assists per set (10.18) while averaging 11.12 helpers per frame in conference play. A native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Ramirez averaged more than a dig per set in league play this season, while also posting 0.59 blocks per frame.


 Negron has shined in his sophomore season as the Bobcats primary option at the libero position, leading the nation in digs per set for much of the spring while entering the conference tournament ranked third in the land (2.66). A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Negron put together an impressive conference season, averaging 2.45 digs per set to rank second in the league.

Harpenau has provided a tremendous two-way presence in the middle for the Bobcats this season, averaging 2.59 kills and 0.62 blocks per set in conference play. The Cincinnati, Ohio native posted a blistering .342 hitting percentage in league action, while ranking 19th in the nation with an overall clip of .301 on the attack this season.

Lucas is in the midst of a fine season in the Green and Gold, averaging 3.24 kills per set in league play to pace the Bobcats in that category. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lucas has posted 1.58 digs and 0.42 blocks per frame in conference play this spring, while also dropping in a team-high 11 service aces.

Ribas has burst onto the scene for the Bobcats this season, posting 3.21 kills per set in conference action while ranking 25th in the nation in overall smashes per frame (3.40). The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico native averaged more than one dig per set in league play this season, while also recording 0.57 blocks per frame.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Sunday when the fourth-seeded Bobcats travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on top-seeded Pfeiffer University in the semifinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament at 3 p.m.

Umatilla grad Jonathan Lucroy signs contract extension with Brewers, April 9, 2012

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who grew up in Umatilla and played at Umatilla High School, signed a five-year contract extension Tuesday morning, according to reports from MLB.com.

The extension runs through the 2016 season with a club option for 2017.

According to reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the contract is believed to be worth between $11 million and $13 million.

Lucroy was signed through the 2012 season, but that agreement was absorbed into the new contract.

Lucroy, 25, was the Brewers No. 1 catcher last season — his first full season in the majors.

He has had a good spring, hitting .469, with a home run and six RBIs, going into Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals in Phoenix.

Despite missing the start of last season while on the disabled list with a broken finger on his right hand, he started 114 games for the Brewers and hit .265 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs. He made his major-league debut in 2010 and played 75 games  with a .253 average, four homers and 26 RBIs.

He played his college baseball at Louisiana Lafayette before becoming a third-round draft pick by the Brewers in 2007.

In 2004, his senior season at Umatilla, Lucroy hit .447 and had 10 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Montverde freshman Ciara “Pepper” Hopkins, a track and cross country runner for the Eagles, has been ranked as the No. 1 female triathlete in the country in the 15-and-under age group by USA Triathlon for the 2011 season. 

The rankings were announced on March 28.

 The ranking comes after a 2011 season where Hopkins, who lives in Clermont, took first-place in her age division in each of the seven triathlons she competed.

Leesburg High School point guard Joe Toolie headed up a list of five area prep basketball players who were named on Thursday to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-State and Academic All-State teams.

Toolie was the area's lone representative in Class 6A, while Eustis' Dustin Dunham was named to the Class 5A team, South Sumter's Shawn Baker got the nod in Class 4A, and Wildwood's Cameron Graham earned the honors in Class 1A.

In addition, Eustis' Josh Brown was named to the Class 5A Academic All-State team.
Toolie, a 6-foot-3 senior, helped the Yellow Jackets reach the Florida High School Athletic Association state finals for the second year in a row.

Leesburg won the Class 4A title in 2011, but fell to Miami Norland in the 2012 Class 6A finals.
Dunham and Brown led Eustis to a 20-plus win season this year, and Baker is a two-sport standout at South Sumter.

Toolie, Dunham, Brown and Graham also helped their teams advance in the regional playoffs in their classifications.


Softball
Tavares extended its record to 19-3 late Wednesday with a 1-0 win against Belleview.
Jessica Castiglione went the distance for the Bulldogs. She allowed five hits and struck out five.

Offensively, Tavares was led by Castiglione, who went 3-for-4. Koral Smith went for 1-for-2 with a double and scored the only run of the game.
Brielle Dougherty went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, and had the game-winning RBI.


East Ridge 25, Poinciana 0
Nikki Brinegar led the Knights past overmatched Poinciana on Wednesday.
The game was stopped after three innings.
Brinegar pitched a complete game, striking out nine and improving to 7-3.
Brinegar also went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs.
Kirsten Foster also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Brianna Daiss had two hits. Courtney Rotton had a triple. Amanda Thomas, Marissa Conde and Mallory Hammonds had two RBIs apiece.
East Ridge improved to 18-4 with the win.


Baseball
Bo Decker went 3-for-3 with two doubles and home run on Thursday to lead East Ridge to a 7-6 home win against Leesburg.
Decker has been on a tear over the last week, hitting .693 with six RBIs and a run scored.
For Leesburg, Cody Sellars took the loss.
Tanner Long had two RBIs for the Yellow Jackets.


Lake County Soccer Club
In cooperation with the Florida Premier League, the Lake County Soccer Club will be conduct two summer camps for players age 5 through 18.

Each age group will be evaluated for competency of play and assigned to the appropriate group for training.
